I'm looking for additional ways to respond to the question, "is your child adopted" and hoping other adoptive parents may have insight for me. I'd like to find a way that answers it vaguely - neither indicating yes, nor indicating no. I haven't figured it out, but something along the lines of "this is my son". My two children and I talked regularly and freely about adoption, but I don't think it's the business of the carry-out guy in the grocery store or people in line behind us at a restaurant.

Kate-I have had very similar conversations with my 4 year old adopted son. You are right, through their little eyes the world is like a fairy tale. My son knows he did not grow in my tummy, but through our conversations I know that he knows we were connected before he was born. We were talking about this just the other day b/c he has a friend whose mom is pregnant. He said to me, "Mom do you have a baby in your tummy?" I replied "no," not fully understanding where he was going with this question. Then he shouted with a great big smile, "No, because I am right here!" Touched my heart to know that he is beginning to understand that he did not have to grow in my belly to make us mother and son. Thank you for posting this story of you and your son

As an adoptive mom and adoption professional for over 23 years this topic is so very important to me. Thank you for discussing it. We have a blog post that also deals with this topic: http://adoptionstar.com/tag/answering-questions-about-adoption/

Thank you Family to Family for making a child who was once only a dream turn into reality, now he his home with us. It was a smooth process and when things got a little hairy the staff of family to family was there to support and guide us along the way. Maxine and her staff are more than employees of an agency, they turned into family, they are loving and caring and very passionate in what they do. Steve Tarr
